Sammanfattning
Introduction: Temporary fecal diversion is used in intestinal surgery to reduce morbidity and mortality. Many doctors and patients believe the subsequent stoma closure to be a minor operation with low if any morbidity. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of complications of stoma closure and to identify possible pre- and intraoperative risk factors. Materials and methods: We performed a retrospective study of 189 consecutive patients who underwent stoma closure in one surgical department. Results: 98 patients (49.6%) had one or more complications; anastomotic leakage was seen in 15 patients (8%), 6 patients died (3.2%), and 41 (22.4%) developed incisional hernia. 32 (17.5%) patients were discharged with a new stoma. A low preoperative albumin level was associated with increased risk of postoperative death (p< 0.02) and a tendency to more anastomotic leakage (p< 0.06). Discussion: Stoma closure is associated with many and serious complications, including death.
