Sammanfattning

There is some evidence that marine n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) protect against coronary heart disease (CHD). The evidence is derived from epidemiological data, animal experiments, anti-arrhythmic effects and the effects of n-3 PUFA on risk factors for CHD. Some, but not all, clinical trials have shown a beneficial effect of fish or fish oil capsules on CHD in patients with established CHD. More clinical data would, however, be desirable, and several clinical trials to investigate the role of n-3 PUFA in the prevention and treatment of CHD are ongoing; many of them will soon be reported.
