Sammanfattning
Introduction: The epidemic of overweight has reached Denmark. It has affected psychiatric patients very greatly. Unhealthy diet and exercise habits and psychopharmacological treatment are important causes. At the Community Mental Health (CMH) Centre in Tønder, we have developed and implemented a psychoeducative weight loss program. Materials and methods: The program consists of nine sessions once a week, each of two hours' duration. The target group is patients attached to the CMH Centre who, related to the disease and its treatment, have experienced weight gain. The first course started in November 2000. The preliminary experiences concern the first four courses. Data were collected on health variables and weight at start, at the end of the course and at a 10-month follow-up. Results: Twenty-seven patients completed the program. Half of these were suffering from episodic depression and one third from a schizophrenic disorder. Their mean weight at start was 100.5 kg (SD = 23.3). Twenty (74.1%) had a body mass index (BMI) =30. At the 10-month follow-up, 22 (81.5%) of the patients showed a mean weight loss of 7.1 kg. However, for the 27 patients as a whole the mean weight at follow-up was reduced to only 95.8 kg (SD = 22.5) as a few of the patients had continued to gain weight. Most of the patients indicated that they had learned something useful and were attempting to live more healthfully. Discussion: This program is useful, seems to have some effect on weight loss, and will require further study.
