Sammanfattning
The professional self-concept of
different health care workers is
an important component in the
professional development. In
Sweden recent interest has been
expressed in the measurement of
the professional self–concept of
nurses, occupational therapists
and medical laboratory technologists.
This paper reports an effort to
refine our understanding of the
instruments NSDF and PSDF
measuring the professional selfconcept
to evaluate them according
to Scientific Advisory Committe
of the Medical Outcomes
Trust [SAC]. Five different studies,
using the NSDF or PSDF
instruments, have been analysed.
The findings are discussed in
relation to the SAC instrument
and to literature about measurement
and analysis. The comparison
between those five studies
reveals that there are some
doubts related to the construct
and criterion validity of the
instruments. This as a result of
the vague prerequisites of the
definition of the construct from
relevant theories, for example
only one item, resourcefulness is
stable in relation to professionalism.
Other factors of importance
are the number of participants
and that the factors have not been
named consistently. In spite of
this the findings, the NSDF and
PSDF instruments, fulfil the main
part of the attributes and criteria
described in the SAC instrument.
