Sammanfattning
Method and findings of the PhD study Narration and identity in interactions between nursing home residents with Alzheimer’s dementia and nursing staff are described.
Transcribed audio recordings of daily interactions between nursing staff and eight nursing home residents with Alzheimer’s dementia were analysed in cases as to the occurrence of narrative configurations, and as to residents’ competence and engagement in the narrative configurations.
Four types of narrative configurations were described in the interactions. The residents showed greater communicative competence and engagement in the narrative configurations than in other communication. This was argued to be signs of the importance of the configurations in creating and maintaining narrative identity.
Considerations on the significance of the findings for nursing practice and research close the article.
