Sammanfattning
Dyspnoea is a common, anxiety-provoking and highly disabling symptom shown by terminally ill and dying patients. Under-treatment is common.
The article gives an account of the various degrees of dyspnoea, how dyspnoea affects patients and their surroundings, when dyspnoea usually occurs and which physiological, psychological, social and environmental factors can cause and influence dyspnoea. An account is given of evidence-based non-pharmacological and pharmacological methods for the relief of dyspnoea. The article contains five forms for the diagnosis of the various degrees of dyspnoea, with evidence-based treatment suggestions developed at the St. Maria Hospice Center in Vejle, Jutland.
