Sammanfattning
The article describes a research project among children and adolescents from ethnic minorities who have type 1 diabetes. The first part was a national survey, which found significantly poorer metabolic control among children and adolescents of other ethnic origin [than Danish]. Parents premises for learning how to manage a chronic disease were characterised by limited schooling and post-school educational background and a pronounced need for interpretation. The survey concluded that families from ethnic minorities constitute a vulnerable group with different needs. The second part involved intervention, comprising the development of guidelines for teachers and teaching materials adapted to the needs of the families, as well as subsequent re-teaching of the children and their parents. The intervention demonstrated how a basic knowledge of the families backgrounds and adaptation of teaching relative to this could improve health education. Close individual contact between family and teacher is also appreciable when it comes to maintaining good results.
