The article describes how new hearing aid users may experience their first hearing aid. It turns out that new users choice is influenced to a high degree by the way people perceive themselves and others in modern society. Hearing aid users may by influenced by a sense of exclusion, and the time they spend together with others can be influenced by a desire not to be a nuisance or to intrude on anyone. The use of a hearing aid and becoming deaf later in life turn out to be associated with various notions, such as being old or dense. Also significant to new hearing aid users is how familiar and experienced they are with technology on the whole. Descriptions are given of some of the ways in which newly hearing-impaired individuals manage their circumstances. The article was written on the background of a thesis which formed part of a degree for health professionals. The thesis was written on the basis participants observations at a hearing clinic, at events related to hearing aids and individual interviews with six hearing aid users.
