Sammanfattning
A quality assurance project has been carried out at the intensive care unit of Odense University Hospital with a view to evaluating pain and pain treatment of neonates undergoing surgery. Pain-scoring has been carried out with the help of the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale, which has been translated into Danish under the name of SIS.
Changes and presumably also improvements in pain treatment have occurred during the project period: Significantly more infants have been prescribed analgesics following use of the Pain Scale. Significantly more paracetamol has been administered to infants in the project group and slightly more morphine. There was in the project group a clear correlation between the intervention of analgesic drugs and a fall in the pain score.
One project group (intervention group) of 55 infants was examined prospectively, while a control group of 46 infants was examined retrospectively. The groups were comparable in terms of demographic data. Ten children in the control group did not receive postoperative analgesic treatment. Only two in the project group did not receive postoperative analgesic treatment.
