Sammanfattning
Endotracheal suction involves the risk of complication and malaise for patients and should be performed with the greatest care on the basis of evidence-based knowledge, taking into account the principles of hygiene. The article recommends suction as
required and hyperoxygenation. Hyperinflation as a technique lacks standardisation and can give rise to complications. It is recommended that the size of the suction catheter does not exceed the inner diameter of the endotracheal tube and that attention is paid to the significance of the cuff pressure.
The authors of the article repudiate rinsing of the endotracheal tube with saline solution, as there is a risk of introducing micro organisms to the lower
respiratory tract. To prevent secretion becoming
viscous, humidification of the inhaled air is
recommended and careful attention should be paid to the patient's state of hydration. The article describes the hygienically warrantable method of suction.
