patients have an eye removed, so it can be difficult to build up sufficient experience about related nursing at individual eye departments. At the eye department at Vejle Hospital, the care of patients who have had an eye removed is handled by a small group of nurses with specialist knowledge. Treatment is systematised to ensure that patients have the same contact nurse throughout. Guidelines have been drawn up for preliminary examination, pre- and post-operative care, and training in changing and caring for prostheses is done in an outpatients nursing clinic. A special nursing report has been drawn up for the primary nurses, a discharge package for patients based on patients' needs brought to light by a patient satisfactions survey. Systematisation and checklists have made it easier for the nurses to draft individual treatments and leaving more time for actual care of the patients, who have to master their new situation. Patients have expressed greater satisfaction, the contact nurses have improved their knowledge and skills and the primary nurses are better informed when their patients are discharged.
