Sammanfattning
The whole family is affected when
a family member is critically ill
and needs intensive care. If the
patient for some reason has to be
moved from one intensive care
unit to another, it will aggravate
the other family members’ conflict
of interest; that of being
close to the relative and being
present at home. Improvements of
the caring quality connected with
transportation of critically ill
patient require knowledge. The
purpose of this qualitative study
was to elucidate family experiences
related to inter-hospital
transportation of their critically
ill relatives. Data was collected
by interviewing ten consecutively
sampled relatives. Content analysis
was chosen for the study. Findings
showed that family experiences
were dependent on what
caused the transportation of the
critically ill patients. The respondents
felt satisfied when the
reason were increased/decreased
need for specialist care or palliative
care for the terminally ill
patient, but negative to transferring
caused by shortage of beds.
They described that adequate
information, long-term planning
and a proper treatment from
medicine and nursing staff created
security and safety. However,
not being allowed to participate
in the ambulance caused insecurity
and anxiety. Further research
is required.
