Sammanfattning

Health has often been described in terms of a philosophical approach and how it can be fulfilled, which is not enough to provide a definition of health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the essential meaning of health based on individuals' experiences. The study was carried out using a philosophical, phenomenological method, and 25 persons were interviewed. The interviews were analysed by phenomenological reduction, in which the general structure of the essence of health was formulated. The findings showed that the essence of health is vital force, which is built up of self-image of worthiness, ability to overcome obstacles and feeling of zest for life. Vital force is health because the individual gets strength through having self-respect, coping with their life and experiencing well-being as well as a meaning in life.
