Sammanfattning

In this article we have reviewed the research literature to find out if Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, known as TENS, can reduce pain and improve function for patients suffering from neuropathic pain. A literature search was made in medical databases and scientific journals. 21 out of 132 articles were included. Results show that randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews show limited evidence that TENS is effective in reducing pain and improving function for patients with neuropathic pain, however they are not designed according to recommended procedures for use of TENS. Observational studies on the other hand, do follow the recommended procedures and show a pain reducing effect. We found no coherence between the effect on pain and function and the choice of pulse frequency, pulse width, modulation, pulse pattern, amplitude or type of aperture. This review clearly shows that TENS may have a short term effect on pain with few adverse effects. Thorough instruction with follow-up during a trial stimulation period is crucial for obtaining good effects. The long term efficacy of TENS is inconclusive.
