Experience from the H:S group of hospitals tells us that as a tool, hygiene audits are efficient in ensuring that all employees are aware of and in practice follow the guidelines of the infection control program. Around one in three infections acquired in hospital could be prevented, if employees were to meet a number of simple rules of hygiene. Hygiene audits are an educational method combining tests and teaching. Audits are carried out by hygiene experts visiting smaller groups of employees in clinical units. The audits take place as relaxed, directive interviews at locations, where the problems occur: at the sink, in the utility room or at a hospital bed. The hospitals within H:S carry out hygiene audits of all their units at least once a year. This ensures that all necessary knowledge reaches all employees and results in continuous improvements. During each visit, the auditors check that any previously occurring issues have been dealt with.
