Sammanfattning
Nursing education in Sweden is a
three-year generalist programme
based on academic principles.
The education has dual goals,
both a professional qualification
and a Bachelor’s degree. Some
studies point out the difficulty of
developing the nursing subject as
an academic discipline, while
others stress that the content of
the curricula has little connection
with reality. The aim is to describe
students’ conceptions of
nursing subject in nursing education.
A questionnaire consisting
of unstructured and structured
questions was used. One hundred
and thirty one students from two
nursing educational programs
participated and the response
rate was 77 per cent (n=101).
The results showed that general
nursing is perceived as abstract,
unstructured and something that
anybody can do. Specific nursing
is clearly described and is based
on medical knowledge. The majority
of students are of the opinion
that the educational content is
directed towards somatic nursing
and only to a small extent
towards psychiatric nursing. The
students are of the belief that the
theoretical and practical education
is focused on hospital work
and only to a minor extent
towards work within community
care. The practical training
should be divided equally between
hospital and community
care and somatic and psychiatric
care in view of the organisation
and goals of the Swedish health
services.
