Sammanfattning

The point of this article is that you have to be just as wary about using and interpreting quantative data as you are about qualitative data. The main message is that nurses must critically appraise their use of statistics. Quantative data can be extremely useful to nurses, so the purpose of the article is to show that numbers are not simply numbers, and that if you use different sources you will get different information. One source of information can be just as correct as another, but it is important that quantative data is subjected critical appraisal. You must be aware of how a given phenomenon has been recorded and whether the figures involved are so-called underreported figures. The article gives an empirical example of personal traffic injuries and injuries recorded at emergency rooms, as well as an analysis of the Danes' purchase of wine and spirits. It will be possible for clinical nursing to develop if nurses are more critical about quantative data and include them in their day-to-do clinical work. Quantative data provides a lot of knowledge.
