Sammanfattning
Both children and parents need support when parents are suffering from mental illness. The Social Development Centre (SUS) carried out a survey in 2005 in order to take stock of the support currently provided in connection with psychiatric treatment in Denmark.
The survey shows that support is offered in connection with two out of three courses of treatment, while only one in five offer information to children about their parents' condition. Conversation groups are available in connection with 10 per cent of courses of treatment.
Support initiatives for children and parents require that staff have the necessary knowledge of, and insight into the field. Staff are given in-service training in relation to half the courses of treatment covered by the survey, and the survey makes it very clear that there is a need for further training.
On the basis of the results, it is recommended that psychiatric initiatives are extended to include family interviews with children and parents and that referral be made to conversation groups for children. It is furthermore recommended that more training be provided for staff and that cross-sector collaboration be extended, partly with the relevant local authorities and partly with children's day care institutions and schools.
