Sammanfattning

Introduction and objective: Thus far, the effect of a health dialogue with school children has only been the subject of study on a minor scale . The objective of this paper is to describe and analyze students' reflections, discussions and action after a health dialogue regardless of sex and age, family social group (SES) and family structure. Study population and method: The study is part of the Danish study of the health and health behaviour of school children, which is part of the international WHO-coordinated Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey. The survey addresses 5th-, 7th- and 9th- class students (11, 13 and 15 year-olds) from a random selection of schools all over Denmark. Of the students who attended school on the day the survey took place, 98 pct. participated. This corresponded with 88 pct. of all enrolled students in the school, n=5.205. The effect of the health dialogue was measured by means of five categories of response: have you thought about the health dialogue; have you discussed the content with your mother, father, siblings, friends, teacher, or others; did you follow the advice of the school nurse; did you follow your own decision; did you visit the school nurse again. Results: More than half the students had reflected on the health dialogue, discussed it with their mother or a friend, followed the advice of the school nurse, and/or pursued their own decision. More than ten percent returned to the school nurse, mostly students from families belonging to lower social groups and girls from reconstructed families. Conclusion: The study has demonstrated the effect of the health dialogue in terms of the students' self-perceived reflections, discussions and actions in light of the health dialogue. School nurses play an important role for students in susceptible situations.
