Sammanfattning
Global health inequalities are appallingly large and the world community must
rise to the challenge. The Commission on Social Determinants of Health
(CSDH) gave an old idea a new and sharper formulation: The social conditions
under which we grow up, work, live and age are prime determinants of
health. Globally, nationally and locally. At the very first meeting of the CSDH, in
Santiago, the following question was already in focus: How do we make sure
that this idea and our recommendations should be taken seriously and have
a chance to be implemented. Present and historical experience suggests that
a social movement is crucial. A series of health commissions, from Santiago
to Malmö, can be seen as a long march through the institutions, inspiring and
at the same time being feed by a larger social movement, which is both local
and global in character. Malmö is now inspiring a larger movement in Sweden,
which has now touched the national government.
