At the Apoplexy Department of Århus University Hospital we are focussing on quality in nursing. We work with e-knowledge-based guidelines and quality development, and we monitor quality by means of audits in relation to selected criteria as well as complications. The audits get close to patients in that they are performed in relation to e.g. nutrition risk evaluation, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, constipation and temperature measurement. This means that the results of an audit rapidly impact on clinical practice, greatly to the benefit of the patients. An important part of the audit process is the communication and discussion of the results in relevant forums. This can take place at several levels, e.g. within the department and at regional level through the apoplexy care network (in what used to be Århus County). This is the only way to constantly improve the quality of nursing and to make a difference as far as patients are concerned.
