Sammanfattning

Background: The use of dental floss is infrequent in young Norwegian adults and estimated to 11 % in 1997 and 2007. An evaluation of an intervention program targeting self-efficacy and other motivational factors in the context of use of dental floss is presented. The primary aim was to increase regular use of dental floss. Material and methods: A field experiment was carried out among young adults atending dental offices in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Participants were allocated randomly to one program group which received standard information, dental floss for use at home and text messages and interactive voice responses provided by cell phone for 28 days, and one control group. Web-based questionnaire surveys were administered at baseline (T1), after 30 days (T2) and after 90 days (T3). Results: Changes in use of dental floss was applied as end-point measure. Increase in daily use of dental floss from T1 to T2 and from T1 to T3 was respectively, 3.5 times (odds ratio 3.5) and 2.3 times (Odds ratio 2.3) greater in the program compared to the control group. Increase in intention to floss and self efficacy with respect to the use of dental floss was observed in the program group only. Both groups evaluated their participation favorably.
