Thorough, relevant literature searches are a vital element of written academic assignments. In this article we describe and give examples of basic search concepts, search strategies and search models. The purpose is to support and inspire nurses working at bachelor level and above in their searches in English language research literature. We explain literature searching in connection with the elaboration of an issue and provide a supported description of how to document literature searches. Our main message is that good, relevant searches require systematic thoroughness and creativity. Furthermore, as you proceed you must acquaint yourself with structures of the different databases.
