Sammanfattning
Evidence-based practice deals e.g. with finding and utilising knowledge, primarily scientific knowledge, based on empirical studies of a quantitative and qualitative nature.
We search literature and think in terms of evidence for three reasons:
to arrive at the best treatment and care
to find documentation of already-existing forms of treatment and care
to create a solid base for clinical and managerial decisions.
The article is based on tool-oriented exposition of essential elements of the literature-search process, which are central to evidence-based practice. The article seeks to find answers to: Why, where and how do I search literature?
The article presents a logical, systematic sequence of the steps which constitute the literature search process: isolation of search areas, choice of databases and establishment of search strategy. Principle elements, such as MeSH-terms, Subheadings, Limit-functions and Boolean operators, are covered, and the article provides guidance for nurses in their search for qualitative literature in databases containing predominantly quantitative literature.
