Sammanfattning
Many years in cancer nursing and my encounter with terminal patients and their families has made me want to do something for the surviving relatives.
My objective was to set up grief support groups for the bereaved, and prior to establishing the first group in 1999 I re-read the literature on grief and crisis support.
My colleagues or I set up groups by calling up surviving relatives some three weeks after their loss to hear how they are managing and to offer and encourage participation in a grief support group.
All the participants have suffered loss, they meet and can talk about their grief, help each other through this grief and find new values in life.
We meet 8-10 times, every three weeks, two hours at a time.
I attend the meetings, keep them going and help make sure that everyone gets a word in. I strive to accommodate participants' grief, maintain a professional approach and to be attentive, engaged and respectful, and get the participants to feel that it is they who are in focus.
I have the backing of the management and colleagues and enjoy supervision in a group of volunteers.
