Sammanfattning
Mastocytosis is a neoplastic disease involving mast cells. The symptoms are caused either by mast cell-derived mediators, such as histamine, or by the infiltration of neoplastic mast cells causing organ failure. A WHO classification for mastocytosis exists and includes two major groups; cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) and systemic mastocytosis (SM). CM is a benign disease in which mast cell infiltration is restricted to the skin. SM can be further divided into several subgroups, where some of them show a progressive course with a fatal outcome. No therapeutic drugs exist at present for these groups of patients. To evaluate new diagnostic measurements and to investigate new therapeutic possibilities a centre of excellence has been created at the Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. The centre includes eight different specialities and is the first Swedish node in the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis.
