Sammanfattning

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction, POCD, is a more common phenomenon than realised. POCD has been diagnosed after both cardiac- and non-cardiac procedures. It affects both young and middle-aged individuals but there is an increasing risk with advancing age. A link has been established between POCD and mortality. The role of anaesthetic compounds is unclear; however some suspicions have been raised involving pharmacological manipulation of the immune system.
