Sammanfattning

This study compared ear and axillary temperature with rectal temperature. The subjects were children ages newborn through six years. A total of 364 children were enrolled in the study. Results were analyzed using the Bland-Altman method, and showed acceptable differences between ear and rectal temperatures in the children older than one year. These differences can depend on the delay in rectal temperature changes. Tympanic measurements had a sensitivity of 77 % for children younger than one year, and 91-93 % for children older than one year. There were great differences between axillary and rectal temperatures in all children except newborns. Conclusion: Tympanic thermometry is a reliable method for children over the age of one year. Rectal thermometry should be used to children younger then one year. Axillary thermometry could be used to newborns.
