Sammanfattning

Major depression is a common and often disabling psychiatric disorder, especially if untreated. Evidence-based treatments for depression include psychopharmacological treatments such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as well as psychological treatments such as interpersonal therapy, cognitive therapy and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Unfortunately there is a lack of skilled therapists trained in evidence based psychotherapeutic treatments. One possibility of increasing the accessibility and use of such treatments is to deliver them in a self-help format. Many clinical trials have evaluated the effect of such “bibliotherapy”; treatments almost exclusively based on cognitive and behavioral protocols. Overall the evidence of such treatments is good, showing clinical significant effects on depression. However, certain features such as (minimal) therapist contact and fine-tuned differential diagnostics seem important. A new and promising area is the deliverance of such treatments via the Internet, which provides certain unique advantages.
