Sammanfattning

Immunization strategies against varicellae need to be based on local data regarding the spread of the disease. In this study we present hospitalization frequencies of children with varicellae at our tertiary hospital, which serves a large catchment area, during the years of 1986-2005. The total frequencies of varicella hospitalisation was 20-30 per 100,000 children <5 years of age per year at our hospital, and was 30-40 in the nation-wide sample, which corresponds to 1.6 and 3.0 per 1,000 varicellae cases. The percentage of patients in our sample with known risk factors for severe varicellae increased from 17 to 28 % and those hosptialised due to complications increased from 38 to 68 % during the study period. Among patients referred for tertiary care, the percentage of patients with complications was 21-51 % and 36-45 %, respectively. In the national registry, only 11 % of the patients had recorded risk factors for severe varicellae. Thirteen children with varicellae died in Sweden between 1987-2002. All had severe underlying disease, however for 9 of these patients varicella was considered to be a significant cause of death.
