Sammanfattning

The ethiology of suicidal behavior is multi-factorial and displays a considerable individual variation. That has to be kept in mind when considering the risks and benefits of an intervention to a suicidal patient. This article summarizes the magnitude of treatment effects for various suicide prevention interventions according to the principles for evidencebased medicine as outlined by the Swedish Council on Technology Assessment in Health Care. Currently, there is a weak scientific support (grade of evidence: 3 out of 4) that clozapin prevents suicide attempts in patients with schizophrenia; that dialectical behavior therapy reduces suicide attempts; that training general practitioners in diagnosing and treating depressive disorders reduces the rates of completed suicide and finally, that lithium diminishes suicide attempts and completed suicide in patients with bipolar disorder and recurrent depression. For all other assessed treatment strategies the current scientific evidence was considered insufficient. This article further stresses the lack of studies in this important research field.
