Sammanfattning

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) combines endoscopy and ultrasound in order to obtain high-resolution images of the gastrointestinal tract as well as surrounding tissues and organs. Recent developments have also allowed the insertion of a needle into lesions and structures of the digestive tract and adjacent tissues facilitating diagnosis and treatment of a number of conditions both within gastroenterology as well as a within number of other specialties. EUS is used for primary diagnosis and staging of cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, bile duct, gallbladder, and rectum. Moreover, EUS facilitates diagnosis of submucosal lesions, such as nodules that may be hiding in the intestinal wall covered by normal appearing mucosa. EUS is also useful for studying bile duct abnormalities including stones in the bile duct or gallbladder as well as evaluating chronic pancreatitis and masses or cysts of the pancreas. Our review shows that EUS has now become an indispensable component in the work-up and treatment of patients with diseases in the gastrointestinal tract.
