Sammanfattning
In Denmark we live in a multicultural society. Consequently, it is important that nursing students achieve intercultural competencies during their nurse training. It is also known that cultural sensitivity and personal development can be achieved - even during short-lasting study periods.
This article stems from a dissertation involving study of the potential intercultural challenges and cultural stress factors for international nursing students, and how clinical tutors can optimally support students' learning.
Through an analysis of the author's own theory-based practice, the conclusion is that international students' stress factors are individual, but include language barriers, missing family and friends, change in diet and adjustment to a new educational structure.
In order to support international students it is important that clinical units endeavour to find out about the students' national- and educational culture, and create their own material about Danish conditions, included a Danish phrasebook. All parties should also be watchful about idealising their own culture. The article presents a series of measures that may reduce intercultural problems.
