Sammanfattning
A liver biopsy is needed when the patient will have potential benefit from the information provided by the biopsy. It is not mandatory in all liver cases e g chronic viral hepatitis when nonivasive methods give sufficient information. In autoimmune hepatitis the biopsy provides important information on inflammatory activity and fibrosis/cirrhosis and assesses progosis if intervention is not performed. Importantly, a rebiopsy during treatment discloses the efficacy of therapy and thus outcome. The biopsy also discloses concomitant disease processes not overt to the clinician. For biliary tract disorders liver biopsy often distinguishes PSC from PBC and provide information when overlap syndroms are present. Ultrasound-guided biopsy is more or less manadory in diagnosis of space-occupying lesions.
