Sammanfattning
Every year, 12,000 Danes are affected by sepsis. Of these, approximately 2000 die. The treatment of sepsis depends on the severity of the illness, and the time-factor with regard to such treatment plays a crucial role in patient survival. Systematic screening of patients enables early identification of sepsis and prompt initiation of treatment. Participation in Operation Life in Intensive Care (ITA) at Århus Hospital provided the opportunity to develop a screening and treatment tool, whereby the work in respect of septic patients was systematised and streamlined.
Nurses have an important role in identifying septic patients, since nursing is the primary discipline in admission situations and nurses perform the daily observations. Consequently, there are rich opportunities to obtain the important observations that form the basis for further treatment.
