Sammanfattning

Last year an evaluation of Swedish clinical research initiated by the Swedish Ministry of Education and Research was presented. Since then a debate about clinical research in Sweden has been taking place. The objective of the present study was to investigate what resident physicians perceive as restraints for conducting or participating in research. A survey was sent to 530 resident physicians in Gothenburg, 298 (53 percent) responded. The answers show that not being able to conduct research within working hours is a major restraint for resident physicians, but deficits related to the academic environment (good tutors, interesting projects, adequate resources, inspiring researching colleagues) are also important obstacles. Thus, deficits in the academic environment suppress research activity among resident physicians. To ensure high quality research in the future, actions that strengthen the academic environment should be made.
