Sammanfattning

The article describes development and pilot-testing of 10 useful tips on patient safety for parents of hospitalised children. The advice is: 1) Better to ask too much than too little, 2) Tell us about your child’s medicine and eating habits, 3) Keep a diary, 4) Many ears hear better, 5) Make agreements, 6) acknowledge your child, 7) Talk together about the operation, 8) Tell us if it’s painful, 9) When you’re going home and 10) Become familiar with your child’s medicine. In the pilot test parents and children found the tips relevant and helpful, and the plan is to implement the 10 tips nationally in all paediatric units. In this way, both patients and health care personnel each play their part in ensuring that treatment becomes safer. One should also consider whether a tailored version of the tips on patient safety should be created for teenagers.
