Sammanfattning

Dietary intake of vitamin D is low in many populations and so also in Sweden. Despite this the mean serum concentrations of 25OH vitamin D were acceptable at 4 and 8 years, being 76 and 68 nmol/L, respectively. This might be referred to supplementation, recommended for these children to 5 years of age. Percentage of children with insufficient concentrations (<50 nmol/L) increased 3-fold from 4 to 8 years and 45 and 68%, respectively, had levels below 75 nmol/L, suggested as lower limit of the optimal level. Children with overweight and children whose mothers were born abroad had lower values. The serum concentrations were positively correlated to serum calcium and negatively to fasting insulin and parathormon. A seasonal variation was seen. High percentage of insufficient concentrations in this study of supplemented children indicates a risk of more impaired vitamin D status with recommendations of no supplementation after 2 yrs of age, as shown in other countries.
