Sammanfattning

Vitamin D status is important for bone development and optimal function of the immune system. In Sweden, daily vitamin D supplements are recommended for all children until two years and to risk groups until five years of age. Thereafter, vitamin D requirement is supposed to be supplied by natural and fortified foods in combination with sun exposure. The northern latitude of Sweden, avoidance of sun exposure, sunscreens, concealing clothing or dark pigmentation increases the risk of suboptimal vitamin D status. It seems justified that D-vitamin supplements should be recommended to children, teenagers and risk groups if current dietary recommendations are not followed and sun exposure is too sparse. There is a need for additional national studies on vitamin D intake and status, especially in risk groups as well as international studies on optimal levels of vitamin D, cut off levels to define hypovitaminosis and deficiency and validation of different analytical methods.
