Sammanfattning

In almost every field of surgery, there have been several reports of an increased frequency of postoperative complications among smokers. This is especially true for wound healing complications. Smokers also have an increased risk of postoperative complications after minor surgery such as inguinal hernia repair or appendectomy. Available studies of snus have not found any increased frequency of postoperative complications among snus users. There is evidence of a dramatic drop in the complication rate if a intensive smoking cessation intervention is started 4-8 weeks ahead of surgery. This intervention also leads to significant long-term abstinence from smoking. This means that the time of surgery is a golden moment to provide smoking cessation intervention. Studies evaluating cost-effectiveness on intensive preoperative smoking cessation have found a moderate cost saving of approximately 100 Euro per patient.
