The public demands an efficacious health service. This means clinical decisions must exhibit high quality and be based in research. This article presents a model for describing the relationship between research, clinical guidelines, clinical decisionmaking and skills development. Operationalising research results to underpinning clinical decisions is a difficult process. This requires an ongoing development of the personnel's skills concerning the identification of relevant clinical issues, searching and reviewing the literature, and applying the results to clinical practice. The development of clinical guidelines can therefore be used as a means of skills development, for both practising nurses, students in the country's university colleges, clinical development nurses and instructors.
