Sammanfattning
The project was carried out at Roskilde Hospital, Department of Gynaecology, where many patients had problems with postoperative nausea and pain management. These presented the patient with considerable difficulties and were obstacles for speedy recovery. The following problems were revealed via a detailed review of hospital and anaesthesia records emphasising pain and nausea documentation, as well as observation of daily actions:
A lack of common objectives among the various categories of care providers by both profession and clinic.
A lack of evaluation of the measures taken to alleviate pain and nausea.
Poorly arranged documentation concerning pain assessment and treatment
Lack of patient involvement.
As a result of working with these four problem areas, treatment of pain and nausea has been improved. Documentation and information provided to the patient has become more systematic thanks to a decision about shared professional points of departure. This decision presupposes:
A dialogue with the patient concerning subjective experience of pain and nausea.
Agreement among nursing professionals concerning documentation and actions taken.
The implementation of a medicinal standard.
