Sammanfattning

Worldwide, the number of users of amphetamine-type stimulants is larger than that of cocaine and opioid users combined. In Sweden, amphetamine remains the most common drug used intravenously. Amphetamine dependence is characterized by drug craving, compulsive and uncontrolled drug intake, and negative consequences such as sleep disorders, depression and anxiety. The opioid antagonist naltrexone reduces craving for amphetamine and the proportion of amphetamine positive urine tests. Central stimulants such as methylphenidate and modafinil have shown some positive effects on amphetamine use but more research is needed. In the future, vaccines and monoclonal antibodies against amphetamine may be used, as well as dopaminergic or nicotinergic partial agonists.
