Sammanfattning
Amphetamine dependence is relatively common in Sweden and it is the most frequently used substance among patients with intravenous
drug abuse. Current treatment options are limited but recently substitution therapy with psychostimulant medication has been evaluated in several
clinical trials. Such treatment is controversial in Sweden, perhaps due to the failure of experimental prescription of psychostimulants in the 1960s.
Recent clinical trials however indicate that structured treatment programs with psychostimulants might have positive effects, although the results
are inconsistent and the evidence base is still limited. Future research is needed in order to determine the potential role of substitution therapy for
amphetamine dependence in clinical practice.
