Sammanfattning
This article describes the Emergency Medicine Outpatient Clinic Project. The goal of the project was to investigate whether setting up an Emergency Medicine Outpatient Clinic could help to reduce the number of unnecessary hospital admissions, and to investigate patient satisfaction when offered an outpatient Emergency Department appointment instead of admission.
The project consists of a quantitative outcome study based on an audit of patient charts, as well as a questionnaire focusing on patient satisfaction.
The results show that there were 187 visits to the Emergency Medicine Outpatient Clinic between 16 August 2010 and 4 March 2011. After visiting the Emergency Medicine Outpatient Clinic, patients either subsequently finished the trajectory with a follow-up by their general practitioner (43%), were transferred to a day hospital (34%) or to another outpatient clinic (13%), or were admitted to hospital (11%).
The patient satisfaction survey showed that approximately 88% of the patients were satisfied with the offered outpatient visit instead of being admitted.
In general it was concluded that the Emergency Medicine Outpatient Clinic is justifiable, as approximately 89% of the patients did not need to be admitted.
