Sammanfattning

The guidelines in Sweden are not as clear as in the US and the UK for newborn eye screening. A study of screening policy in maternity wards and neonatal care showed that maternity ward screening was routinely done in 90 percent of facilities in Sweden. A prospective study based on the National Registry of Pediatric Cataract Surgery for 2007–2009 including 61 children operated before 1 year of age shows a pronounced increase in the percentage of cases referred from maternity wards compared with ten years ago (64 percent vs 50 percent). Child Health Services also contributes to early detection. Screening guidelines are evaluated regularly in the UK and the US and it would be desirable to have the same clear guidelines and evaluationstrategy here.
