Sammanfattning

In Sweden more than 80 % of the Citizens are positive to organ and tissue donation. Despite this fact there are quite few donors per million inhabitants with a maximum of 16.5 in 2008. In this article some of the problems with the identification and management of potential deceased donors are highlighted and among them the most commonly discussed in Sweden today are those of organisational and legal origin. Solutions how to reduce and/or eliminate these problems are also presented. Furthermore, the possibility to increase the number of donors with more Living Donation (LD) as well as the introduction of Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD) in Sweden is also discussed. The world wide problem with organ trafficking is described, as well as the international efforts on how to reduce it.
