Sammanfattning
Aim of the study: The aim of the study is to gain knowledge about how student-run teams in clinical practice can contribute to nursing
students’ development of professional independence.
Background: In this educational model nurses are supervising students in their running of a team at a hospital ward. The students are
responsible for meeting the patients’ need of nursing care. The role of the supervising nurses is merely supervisors without responsibility for
patients outside the team. Each nurse supervises four students.
Methods: Data were collected from students and nurse supervisors through focus group interviews. A qualitative analysis technique was used
to analyze the data.
Results: Crucial factors for students’ development of professional independence in this model are: adapted workload, suitable responsibility,
sufficient supervision and peer teaching. Factors such as not to be given responsibility, getting too much responsibility, high workload and
absence of supervision decreased the students’ development of professional independence.
Conclusions: The student-run team contributes for some students to development of the students’ professional independence in nursing.
