Sammanfattning

This article explores the experiences of ACT-practitioners’ potential to support service-users’ citizenship. Multistage focus group interviews were carried out to generate the data. A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach, inspired by Ricoeur, was used in the data analyses. Three themes were identified: (i) deserving trust; (ii) having dialogues about life; (iii) working together in partnerships. The practitioners’ efforts to create a trusting relationship, to have multifaceted and open dialogues, and to collaborate with their service-users as equals, contributed to strengthening the service-users’ citizenship. These actions and ways of being together, as described by the practitioners, are based upon, and strongly connected to, everyday life issues and are difficult to incorporate into measures or manuals. The ACT-practitioners’ role in this work is understood as an everyday life-supporter and as a partner that walks alongside service-users. This highlights the perspective whereby collaboration is fundamental in the work of regaining citizenship for persons who have severe mental health problems.
