Sammanfattning
The incidence of Lemierre´s syndrome is estimated to be around 3-4 cases/million inhabitants/year and thought to be increasing. It typically presents after a localized head and neck infection with unilateral swelling of the neck due to septic thrombosis of the internal jugular vein. The syndrome has a predilection for teenagers and young adults, carries significant morbidity and has a mortality rate of approximately 5%. The most common pathogen is Fusobacterium necrophorum, a gram negative anerobic rod. The diagnosis of Lemierre´s syndrome is made with positive blood cultures in combination with radiographic verification of internal jugular vein thrombosis. Prompt treatment with antibiotics is of utmost importance but the use of anticoagulation is controversial. We present three cases of Lemierre´s syndrome as well as a review of the literature.
